Planning Your Spring Getaway: Why Ballum Camping Opens on 27 March
If you’re craving nature, space, and calm before summer crowds arrive, Ballum Camping is ready for you—opening on 27 March. This early start unlocks the best of Denmark’s Wadden Sea region in spring: quiet trails, migrating birdlife, fresher air, and lower-season savings. In this guide, you’ll learn why spring is the smart time to visit Ballum Camping, what’s open from day one, and how to plan your trip with confidence.
Why we open on 27 March
Ballum Camping opens on 27 March to match the natural rhythm of the Wadden Sea National Park. Spring here means awakening landscapes, longer daylight compared to mid-winter, and tranquil paths with few people—ideal conditions for a restorative break.
- Immersive nature, fewer crowds: Our 7.5-hectare site is designed for peace and privacy, split into four fields bordered by hedges and trees. With 164 campsites and 16 separate motorhome pitches, there’s ample space to settle in and listen to birdsong and wind in the trees—especially serene in spring.
- Right outside your tent: Several hiking routes start directly from the campsite, so you can lace up and go. Trails (about 4–12 km) run across unpaved stretches through cornfields with big-sky views over the marshes and the Wadden Sea dike.
- Spring spectacles: In spring and autumn, the region is known for the “Black Sun” starling murmurations near the Wadden Sea. These vast flocks move in shifting patterns at dusk—a natural highlight of the season.

- Day trips, culture, and coast: Explore Ribe, Tønder, Møgeltønder, or Løgumkloster; visit a Viking or art museum; or stop by the national park visitor center. You can also head to the Wadden island of Mandø for birdlife and seals.
